An Instagrammed ‘Fridge

October 30, 2013 — 2 Comments

This is my 200th post! What??? Anyway, on with the show…

Can you believe Instagram has only been around since 2010? I can’t remember life before it! (I wish I was joking about that) I have sort of a love/hate relationship with Instagram, but I keep coming back to it because those filters make everything looks so dang good!

This is by no means an original idea, but this weekend I Instagrammed my ‘fridge and I love it!

There are tons of places online to print Instagram photos but I chose Printstagram. They sell 24, 4″x4″ prints for $12, a great deal if you ask me!

I originally decided to print them because I wanted to give one away as a gift, but it turns out most place don’t just sell one or two you have to order many. So I went with it.

I laid out the photos on my table first so I could arrange them in an aesthetic order before I committed them to tape. It made me realize that I take a lot of photos of scenery and Bob and none of my friends. Next time.

I just used scotch tape to put them on the fridge so I’m not sure how long they will last, but I’ll keep you updated.

I think it would be really cool to continue to add to this collage until my whole ‘fridge is covered. I’ll have to really up my Instagramming to get to that point though!

This collage used up most of the photos, but one of the prints got the special treatment:

Me and my besties in Chicago last year. Our goal for that weekend was to have an awesome time and to take a photo of the three of us that we all liked (not an easy task for three women). We succeeded on both counts! The frame is from an online shop called Poppin. I only mention that because they sent me a handwritten thank you note after my purchase! Who does that??

My gallery walls are full of old pictures taken when I was in high school and college so I am happy to have a few updated photos around my house. It makes it look less like I’m obsessed with the past/living in a time warp.

Have you guys done anything with your Instagrams? I also love the mini-magnets you can get, they are adorable!

A Gift From Japan

September 18, 2013 — 1 Comment

Side note: The home tour went amazingly well! I’ll be back on Friday with a post all about it!

A got a gift from Japan, actually I got several, but today I’m only talking about one, and it’s awesome!

I had two students stay with me from Japan a few weeks ago and they were great. Sweet, kind, and came bearing gifts!

Can you spy what is new below?

I’ll get a little closer…
I got a fan! Were you as obsessed with these when you were a kid? I always had one that I played with (which is retrospect is sort of strange… what did I do with it?). Anyway, I was really excited when my friend got me this one, mostly because I love the print on it.

It’s little fish. Adorable! I really really like this print, too bad I can’t go buy more of the fabric!

Go Art Yourself: Updated

August 11, 2012 — 6 Comments

In this post I attempted a DIY abstract painting with lettering. It turned out… eh. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t good either. I’d lived with it on my wall for about six days when I decided I just couldn’t take it. The colors weren’t right for the space and it was such a large piece I knew it would bother me forever. As I was looking through the post I was really inspired by this picture:

I remember thinking when I was at this stage that I really liked it, but at that point I was all ready to paint so it was a fleeting thought. What I like about this is how graphic and bold it is yet so simple. So I took the canvas off the wall and got myself set up to paint…again. I started off by putting the vinyl stickers back on. I didn’t have enough so I cut it up other letters to fit what I needed. It didn’t have to be perfect because my plan was to paint over the whole canvas in white, peel the stickers off, and fill in the letters with black paint.

Once the stickers were all on I had to decided which paint to use. Because I am the ‘Worst Artist Ever’ I decided to use interior house paint again. I used ‘Ballet White’ from Behr. It is the same color I used in the bathroom. I used a large brush and painted the whole canvas white.

This picture is after I did a second coat. I had to do a second coat because the first coat re-wet the paint of the original painting and it got mixed in with the white. I don’t mind a little color coming through but it was quite a lot so I decided to do the second coat. By now this canvas has 274 coats of paint and starting to look like I plaster of Paris-ed it. I’m loving the look. After I let it dry a couple of hours I pulled off the stickers and started outlining and filling in the letters. Because there were so many coats of paint it created a sort of natural outline for me to paint around.

This piece of art has really become a many hour project but I’m VERY happy with this version. I’ve had it up for a day and I haven’t once thought that I want to change it… good sign!

What I like about this version is that it brings the black and white of the rug over to that wall. It looks good with the Union Jack dresser and it has more texture to it than if I had just painted it white from the beginning. But seriously… I’m done painting for a while.
